The podcasts newest episode titled, 15. Jeff Golblum,” is eloquently titled, and quite frankly tells you all pertinent information discussed in the episode and even urges the viewer to form further inquiries that can be quenched with additional individual research. As indicated by the title the main participants in this episode were Jeff Goldblum and Conan O’Brien with some side comments and input provided by Sona Movsesian, Conan’s assistant.

Some topics they cover in the show are moments of euphoria for them, how Conan O’Brien discovered Jeff Goldblum through his early roles on TV such as the horror movie, The Fly, and what he likes about his newer roles on the big screen in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Thor: Ragnarok, and raising children who are constantly surrounded by humor and comedy.

At the beginning of every episode of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, the guest says that they “feel (blank) about being Conan O’Brien’s friend. Usually they respond with one adjective; but, Jeff Goldblum had other ideas.

“Well I feel, let me be truthful, and I feel. Well to the extent that we’re friends I feel we have a deep connection; but, I wish we’d spend more time together. I’m available for your friendship; however, time consuming or any aspect of it. We’ve been friends in the sense that we have on these shows, seeing each other here and there, you’ve–of course– I’ve finagled you into being a part of that show, that movie that I did, and you were so sweet to do that! And then, what else. Oh, we were there at one of your voice over things we were doing, yes yes yes. So, and then I think, did I had a date with you, or did I just ran into you at SoHo house that was lovely. And then I’ve always said, let’s exchange information. But we’ve never availed ourselves. I’ve always said let’s come over to my house and do many things, all manner of things. So, I love being your friend. However it does, or doesn’t pan out. But I tell you again I’m available for the deepest and closest time consuming kind of friendship.”

“Jeff, everyone else has answered with one word.” (0:15 Conan).

I thought this exchange between the two was a very unintended comedic way to begin a very funny conversation between these two personalities. This single back and forth exchange essentially encompasses who Conan O’Brien and Jeff Goldblum are as a person and represents their styles of entertainment.

Jeff Goldblum is generally long winded and is very thorough. Many of his personalities on the big screen and interactions in real life on the small screen are very elaborate and thorough. There’s a lot of depth that comes from Jeff Goldblum which is very apparent by his multi-sentence response to a question that could be simply answered in one question.

On the contrary Conan perfectly responds to Goldblum mockingly with a short statement that Jeff is some sort of scientific anomaly because while every other guest has given a one word answer he told the entire story of their friendship. This exhibits Conan’s style of wit very well. Fans of Conan will know that one of his greatest comedic strengths is his fast wit. Within a moment of his guest finishing their sentence or remark he’s already right on top of the perfect joke to poke fun at his guest, or the topic they are talking about. In this case he first says Goldblum’s name, “Jeff” almost as if he was getting to eye level with a small child to explain to him why what he just did was so absurd. He then plainly states that no other person besides him would go into this long and deep analysis of their entire friendship out of nowhere. It also perfectly transitions into the start of the episode, leaving the listener laughing along and keeps them wanting more while the theme song plays.

I really liked this opening statement by Jeff because it showed that the two have been acquainted for a while and have crossed paths multiple times during their professional lives; but, the two have never had too much time to become closer than work friends. It also introduced Goldblum’s style and suaveness to any listener that isn’t familiar with his personality. I’m more of a long winded and thorough person who doesn’t like to leave out any details, and likes to give the other person I’m talking to as much context as possible to ensure that what I’m saying to them makes the most sense possible. So, I heavily related with Jeff’s style of speech. I think any other viewer would also be intrigued or in awe of Goldblum’s nonchalant-ness.
